Delightful Dassam Falls near Ranchi

During this New Year holiday, we were honoured by the visit of some of our relatives and friends from Kolkata. They came on a three-day short visit. We had a wonderful time with them. We went out every day to nearby tourist attractions. The first day, we went to Itkhori, the second day to Dassam Falls, and the last day to Rajrappa.

Now I am sharing with you my experience of visiting Dassam Falls, a beautiful waterfall near Ranchi in Jharkhand. I visited Dassam Falls with my family and guests. We drove from Ranchi, which is about 40 km away. The road was smooth and scenic, and we reached the waterfall in about an hour. There was a parking lot near the entrance, where we left our car.

When we arrived at the site, we were greeted by a rhythmic Adivasi dance. It is the holiday season and so there was a huge crowd at the falls. It was the first Sunday of the year.

Dassam Falls is also known as Dassam Ghagh, which means “waterfall of ten streams” in the local Mundari language. The waterfall is formed by the Kanchi River, which plunges down from a height of 144 feet into a deep pool.

We then walked down a flight of stairs to reach the viewing platform. The sight of the waterfall was mesmerizing. It looked like a white curtain of water falling from the sky. The sun was shining brightly, creating rainbows in the mist. We took some photos and videos of the waterfall and then decided to go closer to it.

The unique feature of this fall is that when the waterfall is seen, ten water streams are also seen falling. The Dassam Falls is the collective name for the cascade-type waterfalls in Ranchi.

There was a narrow path that led to the base of the waterfall, but it was slippery and steep. We had to be careful not to slip or fall. It was worth it though, because the view from below was even more spectacular. We could feel the power and force of the water as it hit the rocks. We also got wet from the spray, but it felt refreshing.

Dassam Falls is an example of a nick point caused by rejuvenation. A nick point represents breaks in slopes in the longitudinal profile of a river caused by rejuvenation. The break in channel gradient allows water to fall vertically giving rise to a waterfall.  A break or change in slope, in the profile of a river that may be due to the uplift of the land, causing Rejuvenation is known as a nick point. Rejuvenation can be caused by varying factors such as a fault or fold.

We had a nice time enjoying nature at the foot of the falls. We spent about an hour at the waterfall, enjoying its beauty and majesty. We then climbed back up to the platform and headed to a nearby restaurant for snacks. We had some delicious aloo chop (potato fritters) and tea.

We had a wonderful time at Dassam Falls, and I highly recommend it to anyone who loves nature and adventure. It is one of the most beautiful waterfalls in India and a must-see attraction in Jharkhand. If you ever visit Ranchi, don’t miss this opportunity to witness this natural wonder.

  1. Interesting. I have never heard of these falls despite having been to Ranchi. I have heard from people that Ranchi was akin to hill station in yesteryears. All that has changed now.
