Kumbh Mela 2019: A Journey of Faith & Tradition

In January, we attended a wedding in Varanasi and fulfilled my mother's wish to bathe in the Triveni Sangam during Mauni Amavasya. This brought back memories of our 2013 pilgrimage to the Maha Kumbh Mela. The Mela, recognized by UNESCO, attracts millions seeking spiritual purification. Our experience was enriched by the inclusive participation of the Kinnar Akhada. The massive event showcased a seamless blend of tradition and modernity, leaving a profound impact on our spiritual journey.

The Dar es Salaam Festival in Baghdad symbolizes resilience and hope amid challenges faced by the city. Today, we explored Baghdad's historic streets, focusing on Rashid and Mutanabbi streets. Despite the extreme heat, we visited the Shahbandar Café, known for its rich history and traditional Baghdadi lemon tea. The café has been pivotal to Baghdad's intellectual life since 1917, serving as a hub for discussions among poets and thinkers. Shahbandar symbolizes the city's resilience and offers visitors a glimpse into Baghdad's vibrant culture and history.

The Al-Kadhimiya Mosque in Baghdad's Kadhimiya district is a significant Shia shrine, housing the tombs of Imams Musa Al-Kadhim and Muhammad al-Jawad. The mosque, originally constructed in the 8th century, features stunning architecture and historical significance. It has been a hub of religious and cultural activity, drawing pilgrims and visitors from around the world. Ujjain: A Journey Through History & Spirituality

Ujjain is a significant spiritual and cultural hub in India, famous for its over 100 Hindu temples. Notably, it houses the Mahakaleshwar temple, displaying one of the 12 Jyotirlingas. Ujjain's rich heritage in art, literature, and astronomy is evident in its many museums and monuments. Once the residence of emperor Ashoka and other renowned scholars, it is a main pilgrimage destination for Hindus and hosts Kumbh Mela every 12 years. The city is embedded with astonishing legends and was considered as one of the four primary educational centers of ancient India.

Exploring Rumtek Monastery: A Journey Through Spiritual Heritage

Rumtek Monastery, a significant Buddhist religious site laced with rich history and culture, is nestled in the foothills of the Himalayas in Sikkim, India. Built in the 16th century and rebuilt in the mid-20th century, it is a stunning representation of Tibetan architecture and holds numerous religious artifacts. It serves as the seat of Karma Kagyu lineage of Tibetan Buddhism, has a special prayer hall, murals, and an impressive library. The monastery continues to attract global visitors due to its spiritual, cultural, and historical significance.

While traveling from Ranchi to Delhi, the author observed a replica Adivasi hut adorned with Sohrai and Khovar paintings at Birsa Munda airport. Khovar, a historical mural painting tradition originating from the Hazaribagh region of Jharkhand, India, is used to decorate wedding rooms and is considered to bring good fortune. This distinct art form, now recognised by a Geographical Indication tag, reflects matriarchal roots and a deep bond with nature, even adapting to changing times by being created on paper and cloth.

The cultural display at Kolkata's Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport featured traditional Bengali masks, or mukhosh, promoting Bengal’s rich heritage. This initiative, by the Biswa Bangla Marketing Corporation, highlights mask-making's historical significance in spirituality and folklore, preserving this unique craft for future generations amid modern challenges and growing global interest.
