Rail refers to a mode of transportation that utilizes tracks or rails to guide and support the movement of vehicles, typically trains. A railway station, also known as a train station or depot, is a designated location along a rail line where trains stop to load and unload passengers or cargo.
A casual conversation about railway experiences sparked a nostalgic memory for me from 1992. During my honeymoon, an unexpected delay prompted a choice between heading home or staying at the station. Trusting an Assistant Station Master’s updates led us to board the North East Express early, granting us a unique, quiet journey. This experience taught me about faith beyond appearances and the magic in unplanned moments of life.
The Ambubachi Mela at Kamakhya Temple in Guwahati marks a significant annual Hindu festival, celebrating the goddess Kamakhya's menstrual cycle and the divine feminine. The temple, rich in mythology and history, closed its doors for three days out of respect for this natural cycle. A personal narrative reveals a thwarted journey to visit the temple, underscoring themes of devotion, longing, and the influence of divine timing in spiritual journeys.
Despite meticulous planning, our train journey from Birgunj to Ranchi turned chaotic. Delays, dirty coaches, and a water shortage tested our patience. Despite prompt response from Railway Customer Service, the journey continued to be troublesome. Missed connections and inadequate communication added to our frustration. Now, waiting for a bus to Ranchi, we reflect on the rollercoaster of emotions and hope for a smoother journey ahead.
Our adventure began in Ranchi as my wife, Tania, and I awaited the delayed Hyderabad-Raxaul Express. After returning home, we finally boarded the train and reached Raxaul just 15 minutes late. We then traveled to Birgunj, Nepal, via a tanga. The Indo-Nepal Gate marked our entry into Nepal. Exhausted but excited, we arrived at the Annapurna Hotel, eager to explore Birgunj and participate in my training.
Our final day in Darjeeling was filled with exploration, starting at Ghum Railway Station, the highest in India. We visited the Old Ghum Monastery and Batasia Loop, marveling at their histories. The day culminated in the vibrant Chowrasta square before dining at Glenary's, leaving us with cherished memories of this enchanting region.
Calangute, located in North Goa, is a perfect beach vacation destination with pristine beaches, vibrant nightlife, and water sports activities. The journey from Mumbai involves an overnight train ride full of scenic views, including the Western Ghats biodiversity hotspot. Calangute beach offers relaxation, a party atmosphere, and a selection of seafood and drinks. Furthermore, there's a rich history behind its name, tied to local culture and traditions. It also has a lively nightlife, featuring numerous clubs and bars. Overall, Calangute has elements to cater to diverse tourist preferences.
Gopalpur is the perfect place for holidays. During the days of Kalingas, this place was known as the port of Paloura from which traders sailed as far as Java, Bali and Sumatra and piled up wealth dealing in silk and pearl. Later Gopalpur regained its importance to maritime trade during British colonial rule. It was a transit point to export sugar and cheap labourers for the tea gardens of Assam in north-eastern India. Today it survives on fishing as its main industry, and a pristine beach with unforgettable views of the sunrise.
