Ranchi is the capital city of the Indian state of Jharkhand. It is located in the eastern part of India and is known for its natural beauty, with lush greenery and scenic landscapes. Ranchi has a diverse and vibrant culture, influenced by the indigenous tribal communities of Jharkhand. It has a rich tradition of music, dance, and folk art.
On September 6, 2025, my sister-in-law Gungun visited Ranchi after family time in Rourkela. On my day off, we explored the scenic Patratu Valley and Dam. Enjoying a leisurely boat ride and exploring an island, our adventure was filled with laughter and memorable moments, highlighting the beauty of family and nature.
The Ranchi school reunion was a heartwarming celebration of enduring friendships. Starting with a chaotic trip to the Maha Kumbh Mela, the friends enjoyed shared meals, explored scenic spots like Patratu Valley and Dassam Waterfalls, and visited various temples. The gathering emphasized nostalgia, laughter, and treasured memories, reinforcing their unbreakable bond.
Shawarma evokes memories of aromatic, succulent meat slowly roasted to perfection. Beginning in Baghdad’s vibrant streets, where street vendors skillfully carved tender chicken or lamb, it transformed into a cherished culinary experience. Recently, in Ranchi, a roadside vendor reignited that magic for me. While it lacked Baghdad's authenticity, the warm, comforting flavours evoked nostalgia, binding past and present and highlighting food’s power to connect us to cherished memories and moments.
For over 160 years, the Union Club & Library has stood at the heart of Ranchi—an enduring sanctuary of intellect, culture, and community. Born in 1864 from the vision of a few Bengali scholars, it has evolved into a vibrant symbol of the city’s spirit, witnessing eras of colonial rule, India’s freedom movement, and Jharkhand’s emergence as a state. From literary gatherings under lamplight to musical evenings and impassioned debates, the Union Club remains a living chronicle of Ranchi’s cultural heartbeat—where the past and present continue to move together, true to its timeless motto: Sangachchadhvam—“Let us move together.”
Street food offers an authentic culinary experience, exemplified by the Pota Kaleji in Ranchi. This dish combines chicken liver, gizzard, and heart, deep-fried and tossed with spices, sauces, and fresh coriander for rich flavors. Its preparation reflects the vibrant spirit of street food, transforming simple ingredients into a gourmet delight.
Pumpkin flower pakodas, or kumro phool bhaja, are a cherished Bengali delicacy with deep roots in the region's agrarian traditions, where every part of the plant was utilized. In Ranchi, I recently found these vibrant flowers in the market and brought them home, where my wife, Jagrata, expertly transformed them into crispy, golden fritters. The delicate blend of spices and the tender sweetness of the flower made each bite a nostalgic journey, connecting us to our heritage. This simple yet flavorful dish is a family favorite, especially loved by our son, Judhajit, and serves as a reminder of the enduring power of tradition and the joy of sharing it with the next generation.
Ranchi, known for its beauty, is now a culinary destination with Asian Tree restaurant offering a memorable dining experience. A visit with family included refreshing beer, delightful Asian dishes, and exquisite dim sums. This gem in Ranchi's dining scene is a must-visit for a culinary adventure, creating cherished moments with loved ones.
The recent visit to Pa Pa Ya Restaurant at Radisson Blu Hotel in Ranchi was an unforgettable culinary experience. The modern twist on Pan-Asian cuisine, with innovative dishes and creative presentations, made it an ideal spot for a family dinner. From the comforting Laksa and exquisite sushi to the delightful Tacos and Udon noodles, every dish was a flavorful delight. The excellent service and fresh ingredients ensured a truly memorable dining experience. For a delicious and unique Pan-Asian dining experience in Ranchi, Pa Pa Ya is a must-visit.

Recent efforts by the Jharkhand government to restore and preserve the site ensure the continuation of its cultural legacy, attracting visitors and scholars alike.
