A Day Trip to Dassam Falls: Experience Nature’s Majesty

During the recent New Year holiday, we hosted relatives and friends from Kolkata who visited us for three days. We explored nearby attractions, including Itkhori, Dassam Falls, and Rajrappa. The visit to Dassam Falls was a highlight, as we marveled at the 144-foot waterfall, watched Adivasi dance, and trekked to the base. The geological marvel and delicious snacks made it a truly unforgettable experience, blending nature, culture, and adventure.

Itkhori: Where Faiths Converge & Time Stands Still

Itkhori in Chatra district of Jharkhand state of India is situated at around 150 km from Ranchi, the capital of Jharkhand, at the confluence of two rivers named ‘Mahane' and 'Baksa'. Bhadrakali temple complex is a symbol of religious tolerance for centuries. It is a wonderful place with abundance of historic reminiscences and archaeological remnants demonstrating a breath-taking saga of religious tolerance and cultural unity.

A Riverine Reverie: Discovering Kolkata from the Hooghly

Kolkata's rich cultural heritage is reflected through its landmarks such as the iconic Howrah Bridge and Hooghly River, both deeply intertwined with the city's history. The Hooghly river, a key distributary of the holy Ganga River, was vital for establishing several international trade settlements including the East India Company's base, Calcutta. Several sites of historic and cultural significance, including the Howrah Bridge, the Nimtala Crematorium, and Belur Math, reside along the river's banks, making a river cruise an immersive experience into Kolkata's past and present.

Kumbh Mela 2019: A Journey of Faith & Tradition

In January, we attended a wedding in Varanasi and fulfilled my mother's wish to bathe in the Triveni Sangam during Mauni Amavasya. This brought back memories of our 2013 pilgrimage to the Maha Kumbh Mela. The Mela, recognized by UNESCO, attracts millions seeking spiritual purification. Our experience was enriched by the inclusive participation of the Kinnar Akhada. The massive event showcased a seamless blend of tradition and modernity, leaving a profound impact on our spiritual journey.

Exploring Goa’s Mandovi River Cruise Experience

On their second day in Goa, the author booked a sunset cruise on the Mandovi River with Swastik Cruise, returning to the Reis Magos jetty in the evening to board the air-conditioned passenger vessel, Swasti. On board, guests were entertained with traditional Goan dances and music, and treated to a view of Goa's striking sunset. Despite the cruise not being their best experience, the author recommends it for anyone visiting Goa.

North Sikkim Adventure: Exploring Lachung to Yumthang Valley & Beyond

The third day of the journey in Sikkim explored the stunning Yumthang Valley and the dramatic Zero Point. The day began with breathtaking views of the Himalayas in Lachung. The ascent to Zero Point was challenging yet rewarding, revealing a barren landscape at an altitude of 15,300 feet, marking the edge of civilization. The return included a visit to the vibrant Yumthang Valley, rich in floral beauty, before experiencing obstacles on the road back to Gangtok, culminating in unforgettable memories.

Ujjain: A Journey Through History & Spirituality

Ujjain is a significant spiritual and cultural hub in India, famous for its over 100 Hindu temples. Notably, it houses the Mahakaleshwar temple, displaying one of the 12 Jyotirlingas. Ujjain's rich heritage in art, literature, and astronomy is evident in its many museums and monuments. Once the residence of emperor Ashoka and other renowned scholars, it is a main pilgrimage destination for Hindus and hosts Kumbh Mela every 12 years. The city is embedded with astonishing legends and was considered as one of the four primary educational centers of ancient India.

Omkareshwar: Blessed by Gods, & Adorned by Nature

The author recounts their visit to Ujjain, an ancient city in Madhya Pradesh, India, known for its historical prominence and religious significance. He describes their journey to the city via Indore and their exploration of the Omkareshwar Temple, one of the 12 Jyotirlingas dedicated to Lord Shiva. They detail the temple's history, its spiritual significance and the legends associated with it, painting a picture of a destination merging myth, faith, and natural beauty. The trip also included a visit to the Shani temple and a stop at a local dhaba.

Teesta River: Nature’s Artistry & Legends in Sikkim

The Teesta River, originating from the Pahunri glacier, is a 309 km long lifeline flowing through Sikkim and West Bengal in India, and into Bangladesh. Known for its turquoise splendour, the river runs parallel to the National Highway 10, providing a scenic journey amidst green forests. The river's greenish hue is attributed to the presence of blue-green algae and rock flour. It is rich in folklore, considered a creation of the Mother Creator, Itbu-moo, in Lepcha legends, and a symbol of a never-ending desire in Kalika Purana.

Triveni Sangam in Prayagraj is a sacred confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati, drawing pilgrims for centuries. It symbolizes the unity of spirituality and nature, especially in winter when migratory Siberian seagulls enhance its beauty. The site faces ecological threats, reminding visitors of the need for conservation. Triveni Sangam offers a profound encounter with faith, nature, and the importance of preserving this sacred ecosystem for future generations.
