The Balance Between Humanity & Nature

Throughout history, humans have grappled with various illusions, often referred to by our ancestors as “Maya.” Today, I wish to discuss one such illusion: the concept of control. In Sanskrit, “Prakriti” denotes nature or the fundamental, unaltered state of existence, which maintains the equilibrium of life and all living entities.

As humans evolved, we recognized survival’s essence lay in adaptability; if we couldn’t adapt ourselves, we aimed to diminish the fitness of our surroundings to outlast others in the survival race. This comprehension took ages to develop, but once mastered, we became the species unparalleled in this skill.

When observing other species, some construct their dwellings within trees by burrowing or pecking while ensuring the tree remains unharmed. Conversely, in our pursuit, we often cause complete destruction. While we also construct our homes similarly, the distinction lies in their use of the tree versus our use of wood. To some, this might seem insignificant, yet this contrast epitomizes the essence of human nature.

Throughout history, we’ve consistently altered our environment to accommodate our needs, often neglecting the potential equilibrium and repercussions within nature. We’ve operated under the illusion that we could control and foresee the consequences of this balance, but have we ever truly achieved that? Time and again, our actions have resulted in immeasurable destruction.

It’s important to acknowledge that we should live in harmony with nature, striving to comprehend the natural equilibrium. We ought to appreciate and cherish nature for allowing our continued existence. Instead of attempting to control nature, which inevitably leads to losses for us, we should respect its power and coexist with it.

Mitigating our environmental impact involves a multifaceted approach that encompasses individual and collective actions. Here are several ways to address and reduce our impact on the environment:

  1. Reducing Carbon Footprint: Minimize the use of fossil fuels by opting for renewable energy sources, such as solar or wind power. Use energy-efficient appliances and vehicles, and support initiatives that promote sustainability.
  2. Conserving Resources: Practice responsible consumption by reducing, reusing, and recycling materials. Opt for eco-friendly products and packaging to minimize waste.
  3. Protecting Biodiversity: Preserve natural habitats, support conservation efforts, and adopt practices that safeguard biodiversity, such as sustainable agriculture and responsible land use.
  4. Water Conservation: Conserve water by fixing leaks, using water-efficient appliances, and employing practices like rainwater harvesting. Avoid water waste in daily activities.
  5. Promoting Sustainable Practices: Encourage and support businesses, industries, and governments to adopt sustainable practices. This includes implementing regulations to reduce pollution and promote environmentally friendly technologies.
  6. Education and Awareness: Educate communities about the importance of environmental conservation. Raise awareness about the impacts of human activities on the environment and the need for sustainable living.
  7. Supporting Green Initiatives: Engage in or support initiatives that aim to plant trees, restore ecosystems, and promote environmental education and awareness.
  8. Advocacy and Policy Changes: Advocate for policy changes that prioritize environmental protection, support conservation efforts, and reduce carbon emissions. Vote for and support leaders who prioritize sustainability.
  9. Innovation and Technology: Invest in and promote research and development of clean and renewable technologies. Support innovation that aims to reduce environmental impact in various industries.
  10. Community Engagement: Foster community involvement through local initiatives, cleanup drives, tree planting events, and other activities that promote environmental stewardship.

Combining these approaches and integrating them into our lifestyles, industries, and policies can significantly reduce our environmental impact and pave the way for a more sustainable future.

  1. Very well articulated, beta. The mistaken belief that we can manipulate nature has resulted in substantial damage to the environment by humans. It’s essential to seek a balance with nature, comprehend its natural balance, and reduce our negative impact on the environment. Through both our combined and personal efforts, we can reduce environmental damage and pave the way for a sustainable tomorrow.

    1. You’re right, currently these are still mainly in ideas more than in action. But we have to bring these ideas into action and it’s sooner ther better.
Hope that the COP 28 in the early December will show some serious commitments.
