In today’s fast-paced world, many of our elders find themselves living in old-age homes, away from the warmth and comfort of their families. Despite the best efforts of caretakers, there’s often a void in their lives, especially during festivals when memories of family gatherings and shared traditions come rushing back. This is where our club, Maitraee, located in North Office, Doranda, Ranchi, has stepped in for over a decade, determined to bring joy and a sense of belonging to these senior citizens during Durga Puja.
The Beginning of a Beautiful Tradition
It all started with a simple thought — how could we, as a community, contribute meaningfully during Durga Puja, a festival known for its celebration of family, devotion, and togetherness? As a club, Maitraee has always been about fostering bonds, building a sense of camaraderie, and creating opportunities for cultural connection. And what better way to embody the spirit of Durga Puja than by inviting those who may feel forgotten during such moments?

Thus, we initiated our tradition of inviting senior citizens from nearby old-age homes to join us in offering Pushpanjali—flowers and prayers—to the Mother Goddess, Durga, and partake in the bhog, the sacred meal distributed to devotees. With the generous support of the Rotary Club, which has been a partner in this journey, providing logistical help and ensuring smooth arrangements, this annual event has blossomed into one of the most cherished activities of the Durga Puja season.
The Significance of Pushpanjali for Our Elders
For these senior citizens, many of whom have been separated from their families for various reasons, offering Pushpanjali—flowers and prayers—to Durga brings spiritual satisfaction and deep emotional fulfilment. Standing in the presence of the Goddess, joining their hands in prayer, and being part of a larger community of devotees is a powerful reminder that they are still valued and cherished.

The happiness on their faces as they offer flowers to the Goddess is immeasurable. For many, it feels like a reconnection with their past, a chance to relive memories of family rituals and a spiritual reunion with loved ones who may no longer be physically present. The ritual is as much a balm for their souls as it is a prayer for strength, peace, and love.
The Joy of Sharing Bhog
After the Pushpanjali, the senior citizens gather to enjoy the bhog—a sacred meal prepared with utmost devotion. The bhog is more than just food; it represents the blessings of the Goddess herself. For these elders, many of whom live on simple, often restricted diets, this meal is a taste of the festivities they may have once enjoyed with their families.
We ensure that the bhog is prepared in a way that caters to their health needs, keeping in mind any dietary restrictions, so they can partake in the feast without any worries. Watching them relish the bhog, surrounded by smiles and laughter, is a heartwarming sight for all of us at Maitraee. It reinforces the power of togetherness and shared joy.
Mr. Partha Aich: The Pillar of Our Initiative
A special mention must be made of Mr. Partha Aich, a pillar of our club. This initiative has been possible through his relentless efforts and strong relationships with the Rotary Club’s office bearers. His dedication and commitment to the cause have made the smooth execution of this project a reality year after year.
Without his leadership and collaboration with the Rotary Club, we would not have been able to sustain this beautiful tradition for over a decade. From organizing transportation to ensuring comfortable seating and managing special requests from the elderly, the Rotary Club has played a vital role in ensuring the success of this program.
A Blessing in Return
Though we set out with the intent to bring joy to these elders, it is we who feel immensely blessed. Their gratitude leaves a lasting impression on us. These elders, far from their families, find in us a temporary but meaningful connection, and for us, their presence is a reminder of the importance of community, respect for our elders, and the deep, spiritual essence of Durga Puja.
We believe that this tradition has not only benefited the senior citizens but also strengthened the bonds within our club. It has deepened our understanding of compassion, empathy, and the true meaning of service. As we continue this tradition year after year, we feel blessed to be part of something that touches so many lives, including our own.
This year, Maitraee once again embraced our senior guests with open hearts. They were invited to offer Pushpanjali, share the Bhog, and, most importantly, be reminded that they are cherished and not forgotten. Each year, as we come together in service, we are deeply reminded of the profound impact that small acts of kindness can have. It is our humble tribute to those who have lived long, inspiring lives, and continue to show us the beauty of resilience.
In serving these elders, we are serving the Goddess herself, and we feel truly blessed to be able to continue this practice for over a decade, with the hope of keeping it alive for many more years to come.

Oh, it’s an excellent gesture and it’s good that your club has made it a tradition. Shubho Bijoya!
