Reflections on 33 Years of Marriage: Challenges & Joys

Today, we celebrate a significant milestone in our lives—our wedding anniversary. On this day in 1991, Jagrata and I pledged our lives to each other in Varanasi, a city that has thrived for millennia as a beacon of spirituality and culture. Just a stone’s throw from the tranquil grounds of Sarnath, where Lord Buddha delivered his first sermon, this historic city became the backdrop for not just our union, but the beginning of a journey filled with challenges, triumphs, and countless beautiful moments.

The days leading up to our wedding were anything but ordinary. A riot had erupted in Varanasi, throwing the city into chaos and imposing a 24-hour curfew. The vibrant ghats and bustling streets fell silent, their quietude bearing witness to a tense and uncertain time. Yet, amidst this turbulence, love found a way. Our wedding venue was shifted closer to Sarnath, and what could have been a day marred by fear transformed into a solemn and heartfelt celebration of unity and hope.

As I look back on the years gone by, I realize how those early challenges symbolized the essence of our marriage. Much like that day, life has thrown its share of unexpected trials our way. Together, we’ve faced moments that tested our resilience, decisions that shaped our destiny, and storms that strengthened our bond. Through it all, we’ve grown—not just older, but closer, wiser, and infinitely more grateful for each other.

There is something profoundly humbling about growing alongside someone. From sharing dreams and laughter to weathering losses and heartbreaks, every experience has been a thread in the fabric of our shared story. I have watched Jagrata transform from a radiant bride into the incredible woman she is today—a source of strength, love, and inspiration.

Our journey took a transformative turn in October 1992 when we welcomed our son, Judhajit, into the world. Becoming parents gave us an entirely new perspective on life. It brought with it a renewed sense of purpose and a deeper understanding of love. Watching Judhajit grow has been one of the most rewarding experiences of our lives.

In May 2022, we welcomed Tania into our family, as Judhajit’s wife, and our hearts expanded yet again. The joy of seeing our family evolve and thrive is indescribable. It reminds us that love is not a static emotion but one that grows and adapts with each new chapter of life.

Marriage, as I’ve come to understand, is not merely a destination but a continuous journey. It’s the moments in between—the quiet smiles exchanged across a crowded room, the mutual understanding in silence, the everyday acts of care—that truly define a partnership.

Today, as we celebrate 33 years of togetherness, my heart brims with gratitude. Gratitude for the memories we’ve created, the adversities we’ve overcome, and the simple yet profound joy of having someone to call home.

Here’s to us, Jagrata. To the countless sunsets we’ve watched and the countless more we will see together. To love that endures, strengthens, and uplifts. To the family, we’ve built and cherish every day.

Happy anniversary.
