Celebrating 100 Years of Raisina Bengali School: A Personal Journey

As Raisina Bengali School approaches its centenary on January 2, 2025, it brings forth a flood of memories, pride, and gratitude for the institution that has shaped countless lives, including mine. Established in 1925, this iconic institution is not just a school—it’s a part of Delhi’s cultural and historical fabric, preserving traditions while imparting modern education.

Walking down the memory lanes of school life is like opening a treasure chest of emotions – laughter, lessons, friendships, and a sprinkle of mischief! The classrooms that echoed with our innocent chatter, the playgrounds that saw us run wild with dreams, and the teachers who shaped us with their wisdom – every corner holds a story.

My school, Raisina Bengali School, was more than just a place of learning; it was a nurturing ground where we grew, stumbled, and soared. As I recall those mischievous moments and the profound respect I hold for my teachers, I’m overwhelmed with gratitude.

The Humble Beginnings

Founded on January 2, 1925, Raisina Bengali School emerged as a response to the growing need for quality education for Bengali families who migrated to Delhi after the capital shifted from Calcutta (now Kolkata) in 1911. Initially located near Willingdon Hospital, the school later moved to its current premises on Mandir Marg, New Delhi.

With just 57 students and a single teacher, Shri Makhan Lal Mukherjee, the school began its journey. Over the decades, it evolved into a prominent English medium senior secondary school, affiliated with the CBSE curriculum, and gained renown for its contribution to Delhi’s educational landscape.

Raisina Bengali School is more than a center of learning—it’s a cultural hub. While it provides a modern education, the school has also been instrumental in preserving and promoting Bengali language, literature, and culture in Delhi. It has served as a space where students not only excel academically but also connect with their roots, learning to appreciate the richness of their heritage.

Celebrating the Centenary

The centenary celebrations, which began on January 2, 2024, mark a proud moment for all associated with the school. Visiting the campus with my batchmates for the opening ceremony was an emotional and joyous occasion. The halls resonated with stories of shared memories, achievements, and the enduring legacy of Raisina Bengali School.

My Journey at Raisina: 1976–1980

Joining Class IX in 1976, my four years at Raisina Bengali School were transformative and unforgettable. It wasn’t just a place of learning but a second home where bonds were formed, lessons were learned, and memories were made.

Teachers Who Shaped Our Lives

The teachers at Raisina were more than just educators; they were mentors who nurtured our growth and instilled values and discipline. Every teacher was exceptional, from Ruchira Madam in Chemistry, Robin sir in English, to Gunin Sir in Bengali. While recounting the contributions of each would be a lengthy endeavour, I’d like to highlight two individuals who made a significant impact: Shri Shyamal K Ray Choudhuri, our Mathematics teacher, and Shri Narayan C Mukherjee, our Biology teacher.

Shyamal sir, whose lessons extended beyond the classroom. I’ll never forget the lesson he taught me about precision after a mathematics paper where I lost marks for a simple mistake. Though I received a double dose of punishment for appealing to him, it’s a lesson that has stayed with me throughout my life. Narayan sir inspired curiosity and scientific thinking, leaving a deep imprint on my academic journey.

Cherished Memories: Mischief and Magic

Our time at Raisina Bengali School is brimming with memories that could never fit within a few pages. These cherished moments hold a special place in our hearts, painting a vivid picture of a childhood filled with discipline, adventure, and camaraderie.

Operation Ball Rescue

Under the watchful eye of our tall and imposing principal, Shri Amarnath Banerji, discipline was a hallmark of Raisina. If students were caught playing during free periods, their beloved balls would be promptly confiscated. But where there’s a will, there’s a way!

We launched what we fondly called “Operation Ball Rescue.” While some of us kept the principal engaged in earnest discussions about school activities, a nimble and daring friend would sneak into his office to retrieve the confiscated ball. The thrill of this carefully planned caper and the victorious retrieval brought waves of laughter and a sense of unity among us.

Playful Escapades

Our mischievous streak extended beyond just ball rescues. Sneaking snacks into classrooms, devising harmless pranks, and bending the rules in innocent ways were part of our school life. These small acts of rebellion against the structured environment didn’t just add joy — they cemented lifelong friendships.

Though Shri Banerji’s firm hand ensured that Raisina was known for its discipline, it was these playful escapades that added a delightful flavour to our journey. Looking back, these moments of mischief feel like threads woven into the rich tapestry of our school memories.

Science and Success

Raisina played a pivotal role in fostering my love for science, giving me opportunities to represent the school at various fairs and exhibitions. One memorable project was my presentation on optical pyrometers at the Delhi State Science Exhibition. Another standout moment came when I collaborated with my senior, Rupak Bannerji, on a project showcasing conditional reflexes, using two albino rats as live examples. Our project was a sensation at the National Science Exhibition — not only for its scientific merit but also for the endearing sight of the playful rats comfortably perched on our shoulders, sometimes peeping out of our pockets, capturing everyone’s hearts.

Unsung Heroes

The administrative staff and peons were the unsung heroes who kept everything running seamlessly. From the early morning bustle to the final bell, they were always present, quietly ensuring our days were brighter and smoother. Their unwavering dedication and hard work formed the backbone of our daily routines, and their contributions, though often overlooked, were invaluable in shaping our school experience.

A Heartwarming Visit in the 1990s

One of the most cherished moments in my association with Raisina came in the mid-1990s when I visited the school on the afternoon of Saraswati Puja with my wife and toddler son. Meeting my teachers—Shyamal Sir, Narayan Sir, and Amarnath Bannerji Sir — was an emotional experience.

When I touched their feet, they not only recognized me but also inquired about my sister, who had never been a student at the school. They even referred to her by the nickname they had given her — “Russian Didi” — as she was then pursuing her Masters in Russian Language from Jawaharlal Nehru University.

Their warmth extended to my wife, whom they affectionately addressed as “Bouma” (daughter-in-law). With light-hearted banter about my mischievous school days, they made the visit feel like a heartwarming homecoming. Their love and recognition reaffirmed the bond that we, as students, shared with our mentors.

They were more than just teachers—they were mentors and parental figures who shaped the lives of countless students, including mine.

A Century of Pride

As Raisina Bengali School marks its centenary, it celebrates a rich history of academic excellence and cultural preservation. The school has not only equipped students with knowledge but has also instilled values, discipline, and a sense of belonging. It has produced countless alumni who have excelled in diverse fields, carrying forward the school’s legacy.

Forever Grateful

For me and many others, Raisina Bengali School is more than an alma mater—it is a place where dreams are nurtured, and lifelong friendships are forged. The lessons we learned, the camaraderie we shared, and even the mischief we indulged in, remain etched in our hearts as cherished memories.

Nostalgia, they say, is a way of holding on to the things we never want to lose – and school memories are undoubtedly at the top of that list. Here’s to the golden days that shaped the people we are today!

As Raisina Bengali School prepares to enter its next century, let us honour its rich legacy and actively embrace its core values, ensuring that the spirit of Raisina lives on for generations to come.

V well written indeed. Captured the moments v precisely. I studied from 1977 to 1985 (upto Xth), thereafter moved out. We were not very kind to our teachers and had assigned specific nicknames to all of them, including three teachers u mentioned, which I better not mention here for obvious reasons 😀 Principal Sir’s son, Amitabh is our classmate. One Central character was Dwijadas Sir (Civics), another Sanyal Sir (English for higher classes) and Shastri Sir (Hindi). I’ll never forget my days there

  3. It’s wonderful to read such a heartfelt tribute to our beloved alma mater, Raisina Bengali School, on its centenary! I studied there too, from 1973 to 1980, and I’m delighted to see you capture the essence of what made Raisina so special. Being in the same batch as Indro, your words bring back a flood of shared memories.

Your nostalgic reminiscences reminded me of some unforgettable moments, especially the times we bunked school to watch the East Bengal vs. Mohun Bagan matches at Ambedkar Stadium! Those thrilling days, full of youthful excitement and camaraderie, are etched in my heart forever.

I also join you in saluting all the teachers who shaped us, particularly Robin Sir, who taught us English with unmatched elegance while clad in his signature dhoti and kurta. His impeccable command of language, combined with his contribution as an editor of the renowned Wren & Martin grammar book, elevated our learning experience and instilled in us a deep appreciation for the English language.

Your blog beautifully captures the legacy and spirit of Raisina Bengali School, and I share your pride in being part of its rich history. Here’s to celebrating our cherished past and the values that continue to inspire generations of Raisinians!

    1. Thank you, Suranjan. The memories and anecdotes from those days are countless—it would probably take an entire book to capture them all. We were truly fortunate to have such wonderful teachers whose dedication was beyond measure. We owe so much of what we’ve achieved in life to their guidance and the values instilled by our school.

Excellent, Indro. It brought back so many memorable incidences and stories. I took admission in Class 3 and can easily vouch how good our didimonies in prumary and secondary classes were. School is not just about building and classrooms, its all about teachers and friends and the bonding ee were able to develop. We were really lucky to have so many excellent teachers. I went to attend the centenary programme last week and the visit instantly brought back the memories of Golden Jubilee celebrations of 1975, when we were studying at Class 8. Unfortunately, most of the teachers who tought us have passsed away. However, this time around we were lucky to have a chance meeting with our beloved Rajinder Singh sir (PT teacher). We have now become senior citizens, but whenever I visit the school it reminds me the young faces of my classmates. Proud to be part of a century old famous Bengali educational institution of the Capital city of India. Raisina, I love you for giving me so many extraordinary teachers and lively friends. Jai RBS…

        1. What a heartfelt and nostalgic tribute to our beloved school, Raisina Bengali School! Your words beautifully capture the essence of what made our time there so special—the dedicated teachers, the enduring friendships, and the countless memories etched in our hearts. I completely agree that a school is much more than its physical structure; it’s the people, the values, and the camaraderie that define it.

It’s truly bittersweet to reflect on how time has passed, taking some of our cherished teachers with it, but how wonderful that you got to meet Rajinder Singh Sir again. It’s moments like these that bridge the years and remind us of the golden days of our youth. Our school’s legacy continues to shine, thanks to alumni like you who carry its spirit forward with such pride and affection.

          Jai RBS, indeed!
