India often finds itself the subject of both praise and criticism when it comes to healthcare. Some view the system as overburdened and underfunded, while others see it as a beacon of accessibility and affordability. A recent experience shared by a friend traveling in the USA sheds light on just how fortunate we are in India to have a healthcare system that combines quality with affordability.
A Real-Life Experience: Indian Medicines in the US
Our friend, while visiting Seattle, faced a situation that most travellers dread—running out of essential medication. Despite carrying enough respiratory medicines from India, they exhausted their supply and needed a refill. What followed was a saga that highlights the glaring contrasts between the healthcare systems of the two nations.
- Delayed Consultation:
A general physician’s appointment was available only a week later, and that too via a 10-minute video call. - Exorbitant Costs:
The prescription medicines, manufactured by an Indian company, Cipla, cost Rs. 42,000 in the US—a staggering 16 times the price in India. Even after insurance discounts, the medicines cost Rs. 21,000. Adding to this, a bill of $283 (approximately Rs. 23,000) arrived for the brief video consultation. - Limited Availability:
It took five days for the medicines to arrive at the pharmacy, a delay that could have been critical in a medical emergency.
This experience contrasts sharply with India, where a visit to a local pharmacy, a brief consultation with a doctor, and access to essential medicines happen seamlessly and at a fraction of the cost.
India’s Healthcare Advantage
1. Unmatched Affordability
India stands out globally for offering high-quality healthcare at prices that are accessible to the majority.
- Consultation Costs: In private hospitals, a general consultation typically costs between Rs. 300 and Rs. 3000. In government hospitals, consultations are often free or nominally priced.
- Affordable Medicines: India is one of the largest manufacturers of generic drugs, which helps keep medication costs low. The same Cipla-manufactured medicines costing Rs. 2,500 in India are priced at Rs. 42,000 in the US—a stark reminder of the disparity.
2. Accessibility and Efficiency
- Wide Reach: Urban centres boast a dense network of private and public hospitals, while rural areas are increasingly being served by telemedicine and government healthcare programs.
- Immediate Access: Medicines that took five days to procure in the US are usually available over the counter in India within minutes.
3. High Standards of Care
- Indian doctors are globally renowned for their expertise and experience.
- Hospitals like AIIMS, Apollo, Manipal, and Fortis offer advanced treatments in oncology, cardiology, and organ transplants at par with global standards.
- Many Indian hospitals hold international accreditations, ensuring the highest quality of care.
India: A Global Medical Tourism Hub
India’s healthcare system isn’t just a boon for its citizens; it attracts thousands of international patients annually.
- Reasons for Growth:
- World-class medical facilities at one-tenth the cost compared to Western countries.
- Shorter wait times for consultations and procedures.
- English-speaking healthcare professionals ensure clear communication with international patients.
- Success Stories:
Patients from Africa, the Middle East, and Western countries travel to India for treatments ranging from heart surgeries to cancer therapies. This sector contributes significantly to India’s economy, cementing its position as a global healthcare destination.
Government Initiatives: Healthcare for All
India has made significant strides in ensuring healthcare for its vulnerable populations:
- Ayushman Bharat Scheme:
This ambitious program provides free health coverage of up to Rs. 5 lakh annually for over 50 crore Indian citizens. - Subsidised Medicines:
Programs like Jan Aushadhi Kendras make generic medicines available at highly subsidised rates. - Focus on Senior Citizens:
Schemes like the Senior Citizens Health Insurance Scheme and geriatric healthcare programs address the unique needs of India’s ageing population.
While India has made significant strides, challenges like rural healthcare access, infrastructure gaps, and the rising cost of private healthcare still persist. Continuous improvement and equitable distribution of resources are crucial for a truly accessible system for all.
Challenges in Advanced Countries
Despite their technological advancements, countries like the US face challenges that often leave patients longing for the simplicity of Indian healthcare:
- High Costs:
- Insurance premiums, out-of-pocket expenses, and exorbitant consultation fees burden patients.
- Routine procedures can cost ten times more than in India.
- Limited Accessibility:
- For uninsured individuals or those living in rural areas, accessing affordable healthcare is a significant hurdle.
- Long Wait Times:
- In countries like Canada and the UK, waiting periods for specialists and surgeries can extend to months, compared to weeks or even days in India.
Counting Our Blessings
India’s healthcare system is not without its challenges, but its strengths far outweigh its weaknesses. The affordability, accessibility, and quality of care available in India are unparalleled. Citizens enjoy the benefits of a system that caters to millions efficiently, while innovations in telemedicine and diagnostics are further bridging gaps.
While there are positive aspects, it’s important to acknowledge the realities. Many in India still face significant barriers to affordable healthcare, including long wait times, understaffed hospitals, and a lack of quality in certain areas.
Conclusion: A Call for Gratitude
To those who often compare India unfavorably to Western nations, the story from Seattle serves as a reminder to appreciate the healthcare system we often take for granted. India’s medical ecosystem is not only a blessing for its residents but also a beacon of hope for patients from across the globe.
As we strive for continued progress, let’s take pride in the fact that our nation is a global leader in affordable healthcare, bringing smiles and saving lives every day.

I witnessed many such instances concerning fellow elderly Indians during my stay in the US earlier this year. It’s a grim reality while you are there. Despite insurance medical expenses are exorbitant in that country.
Thanks, Amit.
Absolutely true. I have a similar experience in the US. The medical system is very tedious. You can’t get any antibiotic, heart medicine or diabetic medicines without a prescription from a doctor in the US. Doctors won’t even give you a prescription. He will ask you the pharmacy store nearest to you and the prescription will be directly passed on to that pharmacy. You will have to go to that pharmacy to collect medicine after payment.
Thank you 👍
Same experience in the UK. My nephew who is a UK citizen has a muscle tear in his shoulder. The date for the MRI was given after months. During his visit to India, he got it done immediately. Now for the surgery in UK, he got a date after 3 months. The irony of the situation is that he is a Doctor, his father is a doctor and his sister is also a doctor. 😇
Thanks
