Nestled in the heart of Gangtok, Banjhakri Falls stands as a testament to nature’s grandeur and the rich cultural tapestry of Sikkim. This stunning waterfall, cascading down from a height of 100 feet, is more than just a natural wonder; it’s a portal into the mystical world of the Banjhakri, the revered shamanic healer in the local Lepcha language.
Journey to Banjhakri Falls
Our journey to Gangtok was filled with anticipation and excitement. Accompanying us was Jagrata’s father, whom we fondly call Baba. His primary aim was to visit the Medical Institute of Judhajit, but he was equally eager to explore the beautiful city of Gangtok. Today, we decided to take him to Banjhakri Falls, conveniently located just 5 km from the city centre.

The Allure of the Falls
As we approached the Banjhakri Falls, the roar of the waterfall grew louder, blending harmoniously with the chirping of birds and the rustling of leaves. The falls are situated within a beautifully landscaped park that spans over 2 acres. This park is not just a haven for nature lovers but also a cultural treasure trove, adorned with ethnic sculptures and figurines that depict the rich Jhakri culture.
Walking Through the Park
The park is a blend of natural beauty and cultural heritage. Walking trails meander through dense greenery, leading visitors to various viewpoints where the waterfall can be admired in all its glory. Along these trails, sculptures and installations offer glimpses into the shamanistic traditions of the Tamang people of Nepal. These depictions range from rituals and healing ceremonies to the initiation process of becoming a shaman.

One particularly striking feature is the Sikkimese-style bridges that span the park’s streams, guiding visitors to small viewpoints perfect for capturing photos of the majestic falls.

The Banjhakri Rock Garden
A highlight of our visit was the Banjhakri rock garden. This serene garden, created around large rocks and boulders, is dotted with water features like small ponds and streams, adding to the tranquil ambience. The combination of lush greenery, flowing water, and intricate rock formations makes it a perfect spot for relaxation and reflection.
The Legend of Banjhakri
In the Nepali language, “Ban” means “wilderness,” and “Jhākri” means “shaman.” Banjhakri refers to a shaman in the Himalayan region, often associated with spiritual practices and rituals. In some beliefs, Banjhakrini is the female counterpart of Banjhakri, representing different aspects of the same being. Music plays a central role in various religious traditions related to Banjhakri, emphasizing its significance in worship and fostering community connections.
Banjhakri was believed to be a cave dweller. He would find and abduct young boys and girls, taking them to his cave for training in witchcraft and shamanism. Only those pure in body and heart were retained for training. The training period usually lasted for a month, after which they were returned to the same spot where they were abducted. They could then return to their villages to continue practising witchcraft. Those who had physical scars or were not pure of heart were released, sometimes thrown from the cave, and often captured by the larger Banjhakrini.

Baba’s Experience
Unfortunately, Baba couldn’t manage the climb up the stairs to the waterfall’s base. Instead, he found a comfortable spot near the stairs, watching local boys engaged in the simple joy of catching fish in the stream. The stream that runs through the park is a delightful spot for angling enthusiasts, offering a peaceful respite amid the park’s natural beauty.

Conclusion
Our visit to the Banjhakri Falls was a memorable experience, blending the serenity of nature with the mystique of local culture. For anyone planning a trip to Sikkim, Banjhakri Falls is an unmissable destination. Whether you’re a nature enthusiast, a culture buff, or simply looking for a place to unwind, the falls offer a perfect retreat.

As we made our way back to the city, the beauty of the falls and the tranquillity of the park stayed with us, reminding us of the magical allure of Gangtok and its hidden treasures. If you’re ever in Sikkim, make sure to carve out some time to visit this enchanting spot—you won’t be disappointed.
