There are places on Earth where the mountains seem eternal. The Himalayas are among them. Rising above the clouds, their snow-covered summits have stood for millennia as silent sentinels over the great civilisations and river valleys of South Asia. To those who live beneath them, the mountains are not merely geographical features. They are sources of rivers, livelihoods, faith and life itself.
Yet the tragedy unfolding in Nepal this week is a stark reminder that even the seemingly permanent Himalayas are changing.
On August 26, a sudden and catastrophic flash flood swept through Nepal’s Rasuwa district after an enormous surge of water and debris entered the Bhote Koshi River from the Himalayan region on the Tibetan side. Preliminary assessments indicate that an ice-and-rock avalanche or glacial collapse blocked a river channel and then released a tremendous volume of water downstream. The surge raced through the Bhote Koshi and into the Trishuli river system, carrying water, mud, boulders and debris with devastating force.
The result was terrifying. Villages, bridges, roads, hydropower installations and other infrastructure were swept away. Communities along the river corridors had little time to react. What had been a mountain river became, within minutes, a violent wall of water and debris.
As of August 27, more than 160 people had been reported dead in Nepal and Tibet, while hundreds remained missing. Rescue operations were continuing amid damaged roads, difficult terrain and disrupted communications.
But behind those numbers are individual human tragedies: parents searching for children, families waiting for telephone calls that do not come, rescuers looking through mud and wreckage, travellers separated from their loved ones, and communities confronting the destruction of homes and livelihoods.
A Disaster Born in the High Mountains
The immediate cause of this disaster appears to have been a sudden failure in the glacial and mountain environment.
According to preliminary assessments, an ice-rock avalanche and associated blockage released a powerful surge into the river system. Nepal’s Flood Forecasting Division has traced the flood as it travelled from the Tibetan side into the Bhote Koshi, then downstream through the Trishuli and ultimately toward the Narayani system.
The distinction is important. This was not simply an ordinary monsoon flood.
The extraordinary speed and force of the surge meant that communities downstream were confronted with a disaster that behaved very differently from the gradual rise of a conventional river flood. The water carried enormous quantities of sediment, rocks and debris, turning the river into something closer to a moving landslide.
Experts have also pointed to the changing Himalayan cryosphere—the glaciers, snowfields, frozen lakes and permafrost that regulate water in the world’s highest mountains—as a growing source of concern. Climate change does not mean that every individual flood can be attributed solely to global warming. But a warming atmosphere is altering the stability of high-mountain environments, increasing glacial melt and creating conditions in which dangerous water and ice-related events can become more likely.
And this is not an isolated warning.
The Bhote Koshi basin experienced another devastating sudden flood in 2025. The recurrence of such events in the same Himalayan region should command the attention of scientists, governments and communities throughout South Asia.
The Himalayas Are the Water Tower of South Asia
For South Asia, this tragedy has a meaning that goes far beyond Nepal. The Himalayas are the great water tower of South Asia. Their glaciers, snowfields and rainfall feed rivers that sustain hundreds of millions of people across Nepal, India, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Pakistan and Tibet.
The Bhote Koshi flows into the Trishuli, which forms part of the larger Narayani-Gandak river system and ultimately carries Himalayan waters toward the Indian plains. Thus, what happens in the high valleys of Nepal can have consequences far downstream.

This is why Himalayan disasters should never be viewed simply as isolated national emergencies. A landslide in the mountains can become a flood in the plains. A glacial lake can become a threat to a village hundreds of kilometres away. A destroyed bridge in a remote Himalayan valley can interrupt a major trade corridor. And a changing glacier can ultimately affect the water security of entire regions.
The Himalayas connect South Asia physically, economically and environmentally.
A Warning We Cannot Ignore
Perhaps the most disturbing lesson from this disaster is the question of warning. The flood moved with extraordinary speed. Reports indicate that river levels rose dramatically within a very short period, leaving little time for communities to respond.
In such an environment, conventional disaster management is not enough. Nepal, China and India need stronger cooperation in Himalayan hydrology. Real-time river monitoring, satellite observation, glacial-lake surveillance, automated warning stations and cross-border communication must become integral components of Himalayan security.
A warning generated in the mountains must reach the people living beside the river within minutes—not hours. Data about dangerous glacial lakes and unstable slopes should not remain confined within national boundaries. Rivers do not recognise borders, and neither do floods.
The tragedy also raises difficult questions about construction in fragile river corridors. Roads, bridges, hydropower projects, settlements and commercial routes are essential to Himalayan communities. Still, development must increasingly account for a climate in which historical assumptions about river behaviour may no longer be reliable.
The answer cannot be to abandon the mountains. The answer must be to understand them better.
The Mountains Are Speaking
There is something profoundly humbling about this disaster. The Himalayas appear immovable to the human eye. But the forces operating within them are constantly changing. Ice melts. Rock fractures. Lakes form behind unstable barriers. Slopes collapse. Rivers carve new channels.
And climate change is adding another layer of uncertainty to an already volatile landscape. The disaster in Nepal therefore deserves to be seen not merely as a tragic natural event, but as a warning for the entire South Asia.
The mountains and the plains are connected. Nepal’s rivers become India’s rivers. Himalayan glaciers influence the agriculture of the plains. Mountain roads connect communities and economies. The safety of people living in the valleys is inseparable from the safety of those living downstream.
What happens at the roof of the world does not remain at the roof of the world. It travels with the water.
A Prayer for Nepal
At this moment, however, statistics and scientific explanations must give way to compassion. Behind every missing-person figure is a family waiting. Behind every recovered body is a life that mattered. Behind every destroyed house is a lifetime of memories.
And behind every rescue helicopter and search team is the hope that another life may still be found.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Nepal, with those affected across the Himalayan border region, with the rescuers risking their own lives, and with every family still waiting for news of a loved one.
May those who have lost their lives rest in peace. May those who are missing be found. May the injured receive care and the displaced find shelter and strength. And may the families who have suffered this unimaginable loss find courage in the days ahead.
The Himalayas have given South Asia its great rivers and sustained its civilisations for thousands of years. Today, they have given us another message—one that we cannot afford to ignore.
The mountains are changing. The rivers are warning us. And we must listen.

We changed and initiated a cascade of innumerable changes which represents now as a global change. We cannot any more reverse it but only modulate and prepare ourselves for it.
As it is known NOTHING IS PERMANENT EXCEPT CHANGE!

Indeed, we may not be able to reverse many of the changes we have set in motion, but we can still moderate their impact, adapt wisely, and prepare for what lies ahead. “Nothing is permanent except change” is especially true of our fragile Himalayan environment. And when these floodwaters eventually flow downstream, their impact will likely be felt downstream in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and West Bengal as well. The consequences may extend far beyond the areas currently affected.

Sadly, I fear this will not be the last. The 2013 Uttarakhand tragedy remains a stark reminder of how nature’s fury, compounded by human interference, can turn catastrophic. We may not be able to prevent every such event, but we can reduce the loss through better planning, monitoring and preparedness. 🙏
