Exploring Goa’s Mandovi River Cruise Experience

With its sun-kissed beaches and azure Arabian Sea, Goa is a gem on India’s western coastline. But beyond the sands, Goa’s rivers offer an equally enchanting experience. On the second morning of our Goa trip, we explored this aspect by booking a sunset cruise on the Mandovi River with Swastik Cruise. This would be our first river cruise in Goa, adding a fresh chapter to our travel adventures.

Setting the Scene: Boarding Swasti

After an exciting day of sightseeing, we made our way to the Reis Magos jetty, where the Swasti awaited. The queue to board was long, buzzing with the excitement of fellow travellers. We snapped a few pictures to capture the moment:

At exactly 6:00 p.m., the Swasti set sail. The vessel, with its air-conditioned decks and an open top deck, promised a leisurely hour-long journey down the Mandovi River. My son and I chose the open-top deck to enjoy the panoramic views.

Entertainment on the High Seas

As we glided down the river, local performers graced us with traditional Goan folk dances. The vibrant costumes and rhythmic moves transported us into the heart of Goa’s cultural heritage. We couldn’t resist heading down to the air-conditioned deck to watch them up close, beer in hand. The performers sang mandos, a beautiful blend of Konkani and Portuguese music, resonating with tales of nostalgic love.

Soon, the live performances gave way to a DJ who pumped up the energy with EDM tracks. Guests, including us, danced and swayed, lost in the music and the moment.

A Scenic Sail

The cruise took us past Panjim’s picturesque riverfront, old colonial buildings, and the elegant Promenade lined with trees. As we sailed past Miramar, we were treated to a breathtaking sunset:

Rabindranath Tagore’s words came to mind: “Let my thoughts come to you when I am gone, like the afterglow of sunset at the margin of starry silence.” Watching the sun dip below the horizon, painting the sky in hues of orange and pink, was a serene experience, reminding us of Goa’s timeless allure.

Turning Back in Time

As shadows lengthened, the Swasti began its return journey. We sailed past Betim, a quaint area dotted with charming cottages, and one of Goa’s luxurious offshore casinos, Deltin Royale. It felt like a journey back in time, reflecting on the countless visitors who had been captivated by Goa’s beauty over the centuries.

The cruise concluded as we approached the Betim Ferry Terminal, watching a ferry ready to transport people, goods, and vehicles across the river.

Reflection

Although it wasn’t our best river cruise experience, it was a memorable one, offering a unique glimpse into Goa’s riverside charm. The Mandovi River cruise should undoubtedly be on anyone’s itinerary in Goa, providing a different perspective on this beautiful state. The combination of cultural performances, scenic views, and the serene atmosphere of the river made for an unforgettable evening.
