Celebrating Holi in Baghdad: A Festival of Love, Joy, & Unity

Introduction

Holi, one of the most revered and celebrated festivals in India, is a vibrant explosion of colours, joy, and togetherness. Known as the “festival of love,” Holi is a time when people unite, forgetting past resentments and embracing the spirit of forgiveness and friendship. This grand festival, which lasts for a day and a night, begins on the evening of Purnima (Full Moon Day) in the month of Phalgun, marking the end of winter and the arrival of spring.

The Essence of Holi

Legends and Traditions

Holi has deep-rooted mythological significance. One popular legend is the divine love story of Lord Krishna and Radha. Krishna, who had a dark complexion, was anxious about Radha accepting him. His mother, Yashoda, playfully suggested that he smear Radha’s fair face with colours. Krishna followed her advice, leading to the joyous celebration of colours that we now know as Holi.

Another legend speaks of the demon king Hiranyakashipu, his devotee son Prahlad, and his demoness sister Holika. The festival commemorates the triumph of good over evil when Prahlad was saved from a fiery death while Holika burned. This event is celebrated as Holika Dahan on the eve of Holi, symbolizing the destruction of evil.

Celebrations Across India

Holi is celebrated with various names and traditions across India. In Mathura and Vrindavan, the festival is especially grand, echoing the legendary love of Krishna and Radha. People gather to play with vibrant colours, sing and dance, and enjoy festive delicacies like gujiya and thandai.

My Holi Celebration in Baghdad

On March 3, 2022, I received a delightful digital invitation via WhatsApp from the Social Secretary of the Embassy of India, inviting me to join the Holi celebrations on the evening of March 17, 2022. Excited by the prospect, I eagerly anticipated the event, expecting a small gathering. However, upon arriving at the embassy, I was pleasantly surprised by the grand arrangement and the large number of guests.

The Event

The celebration was part of the Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav, marking a special occasion. The evening was filled with engaging activities, including a lively game of Tambola. The dinner was a feast featuring delicious dishes like Biryani, Halwa, and ice creams, bringing a taste of India to Baghdad.

The Highlight

The highlight of the evening was when Ambassador Pise began smearing gulaals (coloured powders) on the guests, turning the atmosphere into a colourful spectacle. It was a joyous moment as everyone, including many local Iraqis experiencing Holi for the first time, joined in the celebration with enthusiasm and joy.

Conclusion

Holi is more than just a festival of colours; it is a celebration of love, unity, and the victory of good over evil. The vibrant hues of Holi bring positivity and happiness, creating memories that last a lifetime. As we celebrate Holi, let us embrace its spirit of togetherness and spread joy and love.

Happy Holi! May this festival of colours bring more cheerful hues into everyone’s life. Holi Hai!
