Designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens, India Gate rises with solemn grace along Rajpath, echoing the grandeur of the Arc de Triomphe. It’s a 42-meter-high sandstone arch that commemorates the 90,000 Indian soldiers who laid down their lives during World War I. Etched into its surface are the names of 13,300 servicemen—Indian and British—whose stories remain etched in the silence of stone.

Amar Jawan Jyoti: The Flame of the Immortal Soldier

Beneath the arch, the Amar Jawan Jyoti flickers with eternal light. Installed in 1971 after the Bangladesh Liberation War, this black marble plinth, crowned with a reversed rifle and soldier’s helmet, is surrounded by four flames that never die. It stands as India’s Tomb of the Unknown Soldier—an ode to those whose names may be lost, but whose valour remains immortal.

Here, silence speaks louder than words. The flame whispers stories of sacrifice, of lives given for a greater cause, of bravery that defies anonymity.

An Evening at India Gate

As twilight descended, India Gate transformed. Floodlights bathed the monument in a golden glow, while nearby fountains danced in hues of violet and blue. The lawns came alive with laughter and leisure—families picnicking, children playing, couples strolling hand in hand.

The air was rich with the scent of street food and the sound of joy. Vendors offered everything from creamy kulfi and spicy chanachur to whimsical toys and fragrant teas. It was a celebration of life surrounding a monument to sacrifice—a juxtaposition that felt deeply poetic.

Vendors lined the area, offering a delightful array of treats – from refreshing teas and ice creams to savoury snacks like chanachur and playful toys. The overall vibe was festive and vibrant, with families, friends, and tourists alike soaking in the beauty and significance of this historic site.

We strolled through the area, savouring the sights and sounds, and felt a deep sense of pride and reverence for the sacrifices commemorated here.

A Culinary Interlude at Pindi Restaurant

The evening found its perfect culinary counterpart at Pindi Restaurant on Pandara Road. Known for its robust North Indian flavours, Pindi served up a feast of succulent chicken dishes that were both comforting and indulgent. The warm ambience and attentive service made it more than a meal—it was a continuation of the evening’s richness.

As we returned to our hotel, hearts full and spirits lifted, the memory of India Gate lingered. It is not just a place to visit—it is a place to feel. A place where history stands tall, where the past meets the present, and where every visitor becomes part of a shared legacy.
