Skewers, Stories, & the Soul of Erbil: A Night at Yasin Restaurant

The mere mention of kebab restaurants in Iraq sparks something primal—a sensory jolt that bypasses logic and dives straight into memory. For me, it’s a flashback drenched in the golden glow of Erbil’s evening light, where laughter mingled with the scent of sizzling meat and the city pulsed with a rhythm both ancient and alive. It was here, in the heart of Kurdistan, that I stumbled upon a culinary gem whispered about with reverence: Yasin Restaurant.

Erbil’s Pulse and the Promise of a Meal

Erbil isn’t just a city—it’s a living mosaic of history and hospitality. Its streets hum with stories, and its food speaks in a language older than borders. Among its many offerings, Yasin Restaurant stands out not just for its kebabs but for the way it wraps you in a warm embrace the moment you step inside.

That evening, I wasn’t alone. I was joined by Joel, whose wit could light up a room faster than the flicker of a grill flame; Joel’s wife, Sheral, quiet but perceptive, her insights often catching us off guard with their depth; and Arbab, our resident culinary sleuth, whose passion for flavours bordered on obsession. Together, we were a patchwork of personalities stitched together by curiosity and hunger.

A Warm Welcome & Ambience

Stepping through its doors was like entering a warm embrace. The air hummed with a lively energy, a symphony of conversations blending with the sizzle of grilling meat. The aroma alone was intoxicating, a promise of the culinary delights that awaited. Despite the restaurant being clearly popular, buzzing with patrons, there was an undeniable sense of welcome, a cosy atmosphere that immediately put us at ease. The decor, a thoughtful blend of traditional Kurdish motifs and contemporary touches, created a setting that felt both authentic and inviting, setting the stage for an evening we wouldn’t soon forget.

The Alchemy of Companionship

Our little group was a microcosm of different personalities, each adding their own unique flavour to the mix. Joel’s infectious humour kept the conversation flowing, peppered with witty remarks that had us all chuckling. Arbab, ever the keen observer of all things culinary, was already scanning the room, his eyes alight with anticipation, no doubt mentally dissecting the grilling techniques and the blend of spices that permeated the air.

The Menu: A Love Letter to Kebab Culture

The menu at Yasin was a kebab lover’s dream—an anthology of skewered poetry. From the classic lamb and beef to more adventurous offerings, each dish promised a journey through Kurdistan’s rich culinary landscape. Choosing was a delicious dilemma, each option more tempting than the last.

Before we could decide, the appetisers arrived like an overture:

  • Tabbouleh, fresh and zesty, a burst of green vitality
  • Hummus, creamy and comforting, paired with warm, pillowy bread
  • Lentil soup, earthy and soothing, the kind that hugs you from the inside
  • Salads, vibrant and crisp, showcasing the bounty of local produce

Each bite was a prelude, a whisper of the feast to come.

The Kebabs: A Symphony of Smoke and Spice

Then came the main act. Platters arrived, heavy with promise and glistening with perfection. The lamb kebabs were tender to the point of disbelief, infused with a spice blend that felt both familiar and mysterious, like a secret passed down through generations. The chicken skewers, charred just right, revealed juicy interiors with a subtle smokiness that lingered like a fond memory.

Every bite was a revelation. The meat spoke of patience, of mastery, of fire and finesse. It wasn’t just food—it was storytelling through smoke.

The Gentle Fade: Tea & Togetherness

As the evening gently transitioned towards its close, we concluded our feast with a round of traditional Kurdish tea. Served warm and fragrant in delicate glasses, it was the perfect digestif, a soothing end to a truly delightful meal. We lingered over our tea, the conversation flowing easily, punctuated by shared laughter and contented sighs. Leaving Yasin Restaurant, our stomachs were full, but more importantly, our hearts were happy, brimming with the warmth of good food, good company, and the creation of cherished memories.

More Than a Meal

Looking back, that evening at Yasin Restaurant was so much more than just a meal. It was a celebration of friendship, a delightful immersion into Kurdish culture, and a profound appreciation for the simple joy of truly exceptional food. While the kebabs were undoubtedly the highlight, it was the shared experience, the laughter echoing around our table, and the stories woven between bites that made it truly special.

So if you ever find yourself in Erbil, let your nose guide you to Yasin Restaurant. Go for the kebabs, stay for the warmth, and leave with a story worth telling.

Fond memories of Erbil, our squad hit up Yasin Restaurant as and when craving to eat kebab used to be , where my jokes were as sharp as the kebabs, and Arbab was more interested in the kitchen than his plate, but we all also loved hummus. We left till the staff were waiting for us to move out the door as we all were engrossed with our usual office talks and pulling Arbab’s leg but with full bellies and a new standard for kebabs—and maybe a bit of an inferiority complex about our own cooking!

Today while eating halem me and sheral remembering our evening dinner with Arbab and Roy,also Yasin crisp kebab. The stay in erbil world not have been better if not accompanied by Roy and Arbab.
